Whenever we vacation in Florida, our family is quite enamored with coconuts. Perhaps this is because most nuts in Wisconsin are small enough to be juggled by a squirrel. Whatever the reason, it usually becomes our mission to discover these exotic fruits and figure out how to get inside to the meat, and the coconut milk.

We also play catch with them while waiting for the trolley.

coconut smash

And smash them against the pavement.

peeling a coconut

And peel them.

coconut yuck

And wrinkle our noses at the slimy not-quite-ripe ones.

cocunuts Florida

And gather a discovered stash by the armload with uncle Randy.

Because we need eight coconuts.

He took us on a very direct route straight north from the marina, stopping only to visit with some dolphins. He was trying to catch low tide for us.

beach writer

Darla has always been an avid reader, but on our recent trip to Sanibel Island, it was remarkable to watch her writing — on the beach, on the porch, on the couch.

Most of the week she spent hours each day penning a story about a mermaid that didn’t know she was a mermaid — she’d been on land with caretakers her whole life, for her protection. By the end of the week, she’d completed some 24 pages. Continue Reading »
