We pulled up to the pier in Juneau and were right in the town, next to the cable car that takes you to the top of Mt. Roberts. We disembarked and went right to a tour operator on the pier to purchase $16 roundtrip shuttles to the Mendenhall Glacier. It was only a 20 minute bus ride and we could begin to see the glacier even from the road.
After we got off the bus, we walked for another 30 minutes to get to the waterfall that’s next to the lake and glacier. There were icebergs in the lake, from calving off the glacier. What’s amazing to me about glaciers, is the beautiful blue color in the ice, as well as the grandness. It seemed like the size of the glacier never changed as we drove or walked closer and closer. It’s like approaching a mountain. It’s so huge you lose perspective, yet we discovered there were tiny kayaks up close to the glacier, revealing its immense size.
