Kindergarten students came by my office the other day to share a birthday cupcake. There were a few cupcakes still in the plastic container, but they were pretty jumbled so I asked if they dropped the container.

“Yes, but they’re okay,” one replied brightly.

As the other opened the container so I could take one, I investigated further, “So you dropped the container, but the cupcakes stayed in the container, right?”

“Yes!”

“No.”

Clearly confused, I asked the question again and the one with the biggest, most innocent smile said with certainty, “Yes they fell out but it’s okay because the floor was clean there. So it’s okay.”

And also there is the 3 second rule, I suppose, because our custodians do an excellent job cleaning up after 560 students.

I hated to burst their bubble, but I had to ask them to throw them out before they tried to gift them to any other unsuspecting educator:)
