sailptt

We continue to fight the ever-present urge to become sucked into our computer screens and the Summer Splash Challenge helps. Our son purchased this little sailboat and has learned to get around our nearby lake pretty well. I don’t know much about sailing, but he manages well without me and I just enjoy the cool breeze on the water.

Once he hones his skills well enough, we may tackle a little bit larger lake, but for now this non-motorized lake in our county park works just fine!!

Sailing is a perfect example of the “body and brain smarts” section of the Summer Splash Challenge. For more great ideas, check out the Parent Further Website.

strawberry shortcake

Though we really didn’t need an excuse to build this beauty of a strawberry shortcake, the gathering of these strawberries served nicely in our Summer Splash Challenge.

We were late in the season by the time we finally got to Lebo’s Bloomin’ Berries, but still had no problem gathering three buckets of beautiful berries. The last two days of the season, the Lebo’s dedicated as a foodshelf fundraiser, with all proceeds going there. What a generous gift to the community! We’ll definitely return next year!

The strawberry-picking is a perfect example of the “Culture and Environment” section of the Summer Splash Challenge. For more great ideas, check out the Parent Further Website.

tools

The Summer Splash Challenge has given us some food for thought as we find good ways to keep busy in the summer. One of my husband’s favorite projects so far this summer is this tool organization wall in the garage. We purchased the pegboard and pegs at Menards and cut it to fit above his work benches. Then the kids worked out the best organization for the tools with the materials we had. He’s always wanted his wrenches where he could find them, and with the kids’ help, now he has it!

On the same day, the kids also helped him to build a wheeled cart to store the camper on. It makes it possible to keep more in the garage because we can move it where we need it.

Either of these projects would fit the “creativity” or “brain and body smarts” sections of the Summer Splash Challenge. For more great ideas, check out the Parent Further Website.

We have a new kitten who loves to climb and sharpen her claws. We’ve drooled over the cat towers we see at the department stores, and we knew our cat would love one, but they’re so expensive. We weren’t sure a barn cat was worthy of a $70 toy. So the kids did a little research, and gathered spare lumber and carpet from the garage.

After inventorying the supplies, they designed a tower fit for a cat:)

With Dad’s help, they measured and cut and nailed carpet. They also wrapped rope and hung cat toys we had around the house.

Cost? $3 (for the rope). She LOVES IT!!!

This fits nicely with the Summer Splash Challenge, in the area of “creativity”.
