Our family was thrilled to visit Hawaii’s Big Island this month, and I’ll share our adventure with you. The photo above is Craig looking at the Kilauea crater, which is an active volcano on the Big Island’s south end. It was an exciting time to be on the island, because as we arrived, we heard about the The Kamoamoa Fissure Eruption that began on March 5, 2011. There was a lot of activity during the week we visited, which was interesting to listen to the park ranger explain, but unfortunately we were unable to see any flowing lava. Most of the park was closed because of the instability of the lava flows, and we couldn’t access from outside the park either – the county had closed off the other entrance as well.

This steam vent was one of many in Volcanoes National Park. Both kids are standing behind the steam, but there is so much, you can’t see them!
We had hoped to see flowing lava during our stay, and it was there, but we were unable to view it, except by helicopter. Maybe next time!

Although we’ve been too busy to miss the cabin all winter, this is the time of year when I start to remember why we loved it so much. This photo of the ice melting in 2007 shows the scene that would give us the hope that spring was surely on its way.
We get this now with the melting snow off the roof, but it’s not quite the same. We’ll miss the cabin more as summer approaches.
