An extra long (and glorious) summer vacation- — due to a district building project — is now officially over and my kids have returned to school after 3 1/2 months.

As I sit alone in my house, for the first time all summer, I think about last year at this time. We were starting a new school, after homeschooling for a year. We all approached the prospect a bit nervously — unsure, but hopeful the district would be a good fit. And it was. I can only pray that this year goes as well as last year did.

My kids now seem so prepared. My fourth-grader awoke before 6 AM, dressed and ate breakfast, purposefully demonstrating he can choose to be so responsible. And my now-middle-schooler got ready on her own as well, needing my help only to decide between this outfit or that.

As they waited for the bus to come, they weren’t watching iCarly, like they would have been last year. They were playing Foosball — a weekend splurge at a garage sale with money that would be the equivalent of approximately 2-3 months of Dish Network. I think our efforts in quitting cable have already borne fruit.

And two minutes before their scheduled pickup, I went out to remind the kids to walk to the bus stop. But the garage was already empty and they waited for the bus with friends. I could only wish them well from a distance.

I hope they have a great day.
