Summertime. I’m so grateful for this season, and the fact I have so much opportunity to enjoy it while it’s here. It’ not just the weather — although Wisconsin is the best place to be during these months — but also the fact the kids and I are home from school and we all do special things as a family.
I know these moments are fleeting — the walks on shaded pathways, laughing at silly jokes and enjoying each others’ company. But I vow to not grieve their future loss, but rather enjoy the moments while they’re here, for whatever time I have them. These moments will give way to new ones, just like yesteryear’s cute toddler expressions gave way to witty and humorous ones with my preteens.
During these months, I feel fortunate to have the awareness and opportunity to give due attention to the small gifts that usually seem so insignificant. We all have moments to appreciate and celebrate, and if we learn to see them, perhaps their frequency will increase, and the grumpy days will diminish. I’m a work-in-progress in this effort, but am trying — perhaps you’ll join me.
Each weekend I share ways I’m enjoying life and appreciating small gifts. This post is also a part of Fussy’s Happiness Project every Thursday.

I know what you mean about stopping to enjoy the special moments. Last night I played backyard golf with my grandsons, and I wanted the time to stand still. The boys take lessons, so they were teaching me how to stand and swing a club. We used a football for the hole. It was an amazing time. We laughed so much and made up the rules as we played.

We’re at the beach right now–I know when we get back that summer will be winding to a close. Such a bittersweet time of year for me, really…

Kelly – your post today really touched me. I got really teary this weekend just thinking about my boy growing up. (He is 13 and on the cusp of young manhood) and I have to admit, I spend some time “grieving his future loss” when I think how fleeting these days are…sometimes that overshadows actually enjoying the days at hand. So, your post hit home.
Happy Monday.

What a wonderful post. My 2 older children are teenagers and my “baby” is 9. I miss them in their younger years… but I truly enjoy them (most of the time!) as they grow into young adults. I try to be sure I treasure the times we are all together. Simple times, but they mean so much.

Those moments ARE fleeting. Glad you are enjoying yourself. =)
