The winner of Great Colonial Projects You Can Build Yourself is Comment #187 – Tamara Bennington
And the winner of Tools of the Ancient Greeks is Comment # 3 – Cindi
Thanks everyone for playing!
I have two outstanding Kris Bordessa books to give away this week. These are excellent resources for anyone wanting to boost kids’ interest in history. Both books are project-oriented and make learning fun. Kris writes in an easy-to-understand and interesting way, sharing little-known facts about each historical era. Illustrations make the projects straight-forward – most needing very few materials to complete.

I’ve written about the colonial decoding project Darla made with Pringle’s cans. This project was one of dozens of hands-on activities in Great Colonial Projects You Can Build Yourself. Did you know that spies were crucial to the colonists, and a large part of the reason we won the American Revolution? We also made a secret mask for messages and had fun giving each other notes to decode.
My son’s favorite project was creating and using an abacus. He learned how to do this by reading one of the 15 activities in Tools of the Ancient Greeks: A Kid’s Guide to the History & Science of Life in Ancient Greece. It was eye-opening to read about the incredible contributions the ancient Greeks made to science and technology.
Lucky for you, I’m giving away one copy of each of these books (two winners.) They’re recommended for ages nine and up. Our kids are 9 and 11, and both books were a perfect fit for reading level and interest.
To be considered for the contest, please leave a explaining which book you would like the most, and how you would use it. You can participate even if you don’t have a blog. Just make sure you leave a working email when you leave your comment. I’ll choose the winner at random after 5 p.m. CST on Friday, August 1. US addresses only. Thanks for stopping by!
We host regular giveaways for parents and educators. Please consider signing up for updates by email or feed. We will never spam you or give out your address.
Be sure to check out all the giveaways this week a the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival! This post is a part of this week’s Carnival of Homeschoolers, as well as the Carnival of Cool Homeschoolers. Both offer a wealth of information. Be sure to check them out!

I would love the Colonial American book because I teach 5th grade. Colonial America is in our benchmarks and I enjoy doing projects with my kids.
4:35 pm
I’d love to take a gander at either one, but have so much on my back-to-school reading list that I don’t know if I’ll have the time before I must march back to class! BTW, it’s that time of week again–please drop on in for a little Silly Summer Sunday Sweepstakes. You have 2 chances to play!
7:18 pm
My sons enjoy learning about historical events and other cultures! These books would be fun to win. Please enter us in your giveaway drawing. I appreciate it! Many thanks, Cindi
8:10 pm
We’re studying the ancients this year. The Ancient Greeks book is on my wish list.

8:20 pm
My son would enjoy either book, he enjoys project books. And it looks like he would learn some history with these books on top of finding some new projects to work on.
10:34 pm
Wow what great books. I am very interested in history now, never was in school & I regret that. I’d love to win the Great Colonial Projects You Can Build Yourself. I think it would really benefit my daughters and help them start a love of history now while in school! I’d like that one because it is along the lines of things they are both learning in school right now (well this grade level in the fall)
10:50 pm
I would love to win the Ancient Greeks book because we are studying the ancients with Story of the World Vol. 1. We love hands on projects and having extra ideas to chose from would be wonderful.
11:06 pm
I would like to win the Ancient Greeks book for my daughter to use for her studies. Great giveaway, thanks!
11:22 pm
I would like the Great Colonial America Projects book to use in our homeschool.
7:37 am
We’re working through Story of the World Volume 1 this year, the Ancients, so I would love a copy of Kris’s Ancient Greeks book to add extra spice to our studies. Thanks!
8:02 am
We hope to raise our children in Africa, which means we will need to supplement their education. The Colonial History book would be perfect for them to learn more about American History!
8:05 am
We completely loved the Colonial book that Kris wrote. And we learned so much from it. So, I know that my son would really enjoy the Ancient Greek book. I’m looking forward to the book she has coming out in September, too. It’s about medieval history, and my son is outrageously interested in that. What is it about boys and history? Cool, huh?
8:24 am
Either would be great, but the Ancient Greek book would be fun. Then our kids could be our tour guide when we go!!
8:25 am
The Ancient Greeks sounds great. I think it would be neat and help my son understand the New Testament better.

8:29 am
Wow, so glad I found you — what an interesting site.
Both books look great, so it’s hard for me to pick. I’ll put my name in for the Ancient Greeks.
I’ll be back to visit some more. Thanks for joining the giveaway.
8:29 am
I would choose the Ancient Greek book for myself. I am taking a class on Ancient Greece in the fall, and I have noticed books meant for children are not near as boring as my college books.
8:32 am
I would love the colonial projects book! I would use it with my daughter and tie it in with a visit to our local living history museum.
8:34 am
I’ll say I want the Greek book…but, I’d love both either way lol.
I’d use it for homeschooling and for group activities with our local parenting group! Awesome, and thanks for the chance to win!!
8:37 am
Wow, what a great set of books. I’m impressed. Thanks for entering me.
8:38 am
I am a homeschooler also and we are really into the Colonial time period so that would be my wish!
8:43 am
Colonial America would be my first choice – We know that history isn’t a strong point for American kids, but I think it can be more relevant if we start at home. Easier to relate to!
8:49 am
I would love the ancient greeks book. I loved stuying it when I was little, and would love to share it with my kids.
8:50 am
I homeschool and we are studying American history this year. The Colonial Ameria book would be great but the other book would be wonderful too. Thanks!

9:17 am
I would like the one on Ancient Greeks, since my daughter is doing ancient history starting this coming fall. We love hands-on projects for learning.
9:18 am
Hmm. I think the Greek book, because that seems to be an era that we have not canvassed enough in our homeschool.
9:20 am
My kiddos are still too young for these books, but if I win I would keep them safe and certainly use them in a few years! I love teaching my children new things and these books look so fun! Thanks for the giveaway.
9:20 am

9:21 am
Oh dear, please delete either this entry or the one I just made. I can’t believe I forgot to write which book I would prefer. I like the Colonial America book because I loved learning about that era as a kid. Thanks!
9:26 am
I would like the greek book. I used to love greek things as a kid and I think my oldest dd would like this book as well
9:27 am
I think I’d particularly like the Colonial America book for my daughters. My husband is a major American history buff, and very much into hands-on projects, so I think this would be great for some father/daughter bonding time. Thanks so much!
9:31 am
I would love to win either, but if I have to pick one, I would choose
Tools of the Ancient Greeks: A Kid’s Guide to the History & Science of Life in Ancient Greece.
My son is facinated with Greece and History, so this would be perfect, he would really enjoy reading and learning thru this tool.
9:34 am
These look great! My 9-year-old just studied colonial days in school last year, so I know he’d love to dive in and do some cool projects relating to what he’s learned. But both books look fantastic!
9:37 am
I would love the Ancient Greeks book. My son really loves reading about ancient civilizations.

9:51 am
Oh, as a homeschooler and history major, this is a TOUGH choice, but I guess I have to go with the Greek book because my daughter is studying ancient history right now.
9:56 am
I would like the Ancient Greeks book. My son studied this last year, and to be perfectly honest, didn’t quite focus and got a bad grade in History. I’d love to use this book as a fun way for him to learn about Ancient Greeks that he would actually be into! I also might use it in my classroom next year:)
10:02 am
Either one for homeschool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10:05 am
Oh, the Ancient Greeks book! Wow, that looks so fun. We love to travel, and even though my son is a little young yet for this one, we set aside books for him all the time. Greece is on the “someday” list. How cool for him to learn before we go!
themommyspot(at)gmail(dot)com
10:06 am
These look like great books! I love history and I really want to pass that onto my children. My dd isn’t old enough yet for these books, but will be before I know it. I plan on homeschooling and this would be a great addition to our school. The Colonial America project books looks great!

I think I would vote to win the colonial book first.
We are homeschoolers. This year my Princess is working on American history. She is dyslexic and adhd so she loves hands on experiences. We are also in the fall in Co-op this year having an American Party. I bet there would be something in that book that might help me with planning that special party.
but if I wont the other book I would give it to a dear friend of mine who has been begging me for ideas on Greece. lol
Have a great time with the contests..

10:59 am
I would pick the Greece book because I have a harder time teaching that era of history. My son will soon be just the right age to appreciate all those old-time battles and buildings and such.
Thanks for the chance to win!
11:21 am
I would love the Colonial American book for my 9-year old daughter. She is very interested in history, especially American history. I know next-to-nothing about it, so we need all the help we can get. Thanks for the great giveaway.
11:23 am

We homeschool our children and we study a lot in ancient history, so the Ancient Greeks book is the most interesting to me. However, in about two years we’ll be on to the period of time in which the colonies were born, so that would be a great book, too.
2:15 pm
Ooo! It’s so hard to pick. Either one would be great. I think though, if I had to pick it would be the colonial one, because National Treasure was a really awesome movie. I could do the activities with my sister, who just turned 12. I know she really liked National Treasure too.
2:16 pm
Oh, it is so hard to choose!! We’ll be covering both subjects in the future and both would be great! I think the Colonial America one would be used first, so I choose that one! Can always use more homeschooling resources! Thanks!

2:25 am
I would love either book- I would donate it to my children’s school library.
4:22 am
I teach high school history. I don’t want my students to be like the people who, upon hearing what I do for a living, say “Boy, I really hated history in school. It was so boring and so many dates and facts.” I use projects and other interactive activities in my classroom as much as possible.
You might be thinking that something like this isn’t really for high school kids, but I’ve found that not only are there not so many great materials for high school kids, but also that the stuff geared for younger kids and then modified work the best.
So, I’d really love the Colonial America Projects.
THANKS!!
6:18 am
I’d like to try the Ancient Greeks book. My kids have heard a fair amount of Colonial American history in school, but I don’t think they know anything about Ancient Greece.

I recently found out I was part Greek. I would like the book on Greek History to teach my kids about part of their heritage.
5:24 pm
I would love to use these in our home schooling.
5:32 pm
Hmm…decisions, decisions, decisions. I like both a lot. I am trying to think which one we be more likely to use next. If I follow classical approach, then I guess my next cue would be Greek, but either would be a sweet blessing indeed.
Thank you for this opportunity!
7:15 pm
I have a history addict! He’d love these!
7:58 pm
