Having read Parenting Preschoolers with a Purpose (giveaway here,) I was thrilled when the next in the series was released - Parenting Preteens with a Purpose
. My kids are ages nine and eleven, so our family finds itself smack dab in the middle of the preteen years, and this book is a great read.
Author Kate Thomsen guides parents of preteens on the joyful journey of the middle years, addressing the common pitfalls, as well as teachable moments we all can use, if we’ve prepared ourselves to be ready for them. Parenting Preteens with a Purpose is an easy “weekend read” that will leave parents with a fistful of positive parenting strategies to try on their kids.
Parenting Preteens with a Purpose is divided into three parts - Becoming an Asset-Building Parent, Taking Care of Yourself, and Taking Care of Your Preteen. Thomsen addresses dozens of common and important preteen issues, in an engaging and common-sense way- curfews, puberty, and stress to name just three. The reader finishes the book feeling empowered to tackle the awesome job of parenting preteens, with skill and inspiration.
Search Institute Press will give away a copy of this book to TWO readers. To be eligible for the giveaway, please visit Search Institute and come back here to tell us another title that looks interesting as well. (Scroll to the very bottom of this post to find the comment form.) I’ll randomly choose the winners on April 18.
I host regular giveaways for parents and educators - two more big giveaways are planned for April. Please consider signing up for updates by email. I will never spam you or give out your address.

This isn’t a book, but it’s on their site: “I Can Monsters”-Cards. I’d love to use these with my daughter, because I’m starting to notice her saying these words more frequently: “I can’t!”

This probably will come as no surprise, but I liked the Great Games/Boredom Busters book (not the exact title). 175 Ways to foster creativity? Heck, yeah, I could use some new ideas :).

After several weeks of “punishment” for my eleven year old daughter (no tv, no playdates, no American Idol…) culminating in the silent treatment this morning - I was brought to guilty tears as I perused the Search Institute Press website.
Besides the “Parenting Preteens with a Purpose” book, the “Ask me Where I’m Going & Other Revealing Messages…” book also speaks to me as a mom of a very strong-willed child. Baby books abound when you begin parenting - but there are so few worthwhile tomes when searching for insight on pre-teens!
9:55 am
I’d like to win this for my brother in law.

What a thrill it is to see my book on your site! Thank you, Kelly. I don’t want to win it since I have read it - many times!
Just remember, none of us got the lost set of parenting directions. My boys taught me all along the way, and I wanted to share my experience and knowledge with all of you, now that I have 20/20 hindsight! Good luck to you all! Kate
