(This post will also be a part of Works for me Wednesday this week.)
Halloween is a great time to pass the torch — it’s an opportunity to give kids a choice, and empower them to come up with their own ideas. When my son Craig was six, he chose to dress up as a fisherman. My article about it was published in a magazine and I shared it with you exactly a year ago.
This year, it looks like Darla will be a witch and Craig will dress up as Johnny Cash. Whatever they decide, it will be their own getup, put together with items on hand, or those stockpiled in their “dress-up bin” from after-Halloween sales in years past. I can’t wait to tell you next week what Darla has dreamed up for her Halloween themed Book-Worm Wednesday.
At ages eight and ten, our kids are very capable of creating their own ensembles, with simple guidance from us. But that’s partly because they’ve been expected to do it for years.
What will your kids be for Halloween?
You can join me each week, and pass the torch. Just share a simple or stupendous time kids make you proud, or a way you see adults passing the torch. Blog your story or share it in comments. My comment plugin will leave your link automatically. Former PTT posts. Complete Guidelines.

Oh – no I don’t have a theme for everyone else – just me. So no worries! I’m glad you’re joining us this week!

Johnny Cash!? Wow!! What a unique choice for a child to make. Does he like Cash’s music?
When I asked my 3 1/2 y/o daughter what she wanted to be for halloween, she told me “Icky Cat Food.” I don’t know how we’re going to manage that one. I think she might just be a pirate instead. haha

He chose Johnny Cash because that’s what his Grandpa sings when he plays guitar. And he’s helping Craig to learn to play.
Good luck with that cat food!

I’m really looking forward to the day when my children start putting together their own Halloween costumes. They are both 3 now. However, my girl has certainly been creative in her choice this year. “I want to be an Owl, Mommy.” and “I still want to be an Owl, Mommy.” So, she will be an owl. I’m actually having fun putting all the items together. My son will be an airplane pilot, again. I used a navy blue blazer and pinned little airplane buttons on the lapels. Then he wore head phones. Simple but perfect for a little one that doesn’t like “stuff” on them.
Great post idea for WFMW! Thanks!

Our downtown association opens up business for Halloween. One year I dressed as a witch, and kids were scared to come in our office. (I was in a leg cast and crutches – so I had additional props)

For a scary look at what happens when you don’t expect them to create their own costumes and instead make the costumes for them, or buy them, take a look at the mess I’m in now!

Hmm…I think I may have to do this next year! My boys are in the costume/dress up stuff everyday so I’m sure they would come up with something fantastical. One day my oldest said he wanted to be a Cowboy Astronaut Fireman when he grew up ~ maybe he could figure out how to dress as one for Halloween!

PTT – Halloween costume edition
Maybe we make Halloween harder than it needs to be. Here’s what works for us.
