For the first time ever, our kids are latch-key for a short while, a couple times per week. Our neighbors keep a close eye on them, and we’ve discussed strict guidelines regarding safety and constructive use of time, but one strategy has been especially helpful. We write reminders on an extra-large Post-it note and stick it on the television.

Works for me! For more great tips, please visit Rocks in my Dryer.

LOL! That’s the perfect place to stick it. You know they’ll have to see it!

Post it notes come to the rescue ALMOST as often as duct tape!

I totally agree – Post-its could probably solve world peace, if we’d think about it long enough.
Too bad they don’t have a spell-check though. If you’ll notice, my spelling is horrid on quickly-scratched notes;)

Don’t worry, my spelling is just as bad. ALL THE TIME
Great tip! i am hoping one day i can get Anna to do her chores like that.

Good idea. For MY son, I need to put it on his tennis racket and/or guitar (well, as well as the TV). Good idea though…..

Great list, great placement.
I just want to know when our kids got big enough for this?

Latch-Key Post-it Notes
Here’s a tip for parents who are trying to help their kids be efficient for the few minutes they’re latch-key after school. A simple strategy to keep your kids busy while they’re waiting for parents to get home.

I do this even when I am home! I work at home and sometimes am on the phone with a client, so my kids know to come in and check “the to-do list.” I put it on the refrigerator – the first place my kids go when they walk in the door! My kids are 11 and 13, and they know “no tv or computer until jobs are done!” Glad I am not the only dictator out here!
Power to moms!
