Yesterday I asked you to identify a photo. Your guesses were great (be sure to go read them!) but Sandy Carlson got it right. It’s a thatched roof at Plimoth Plantation — I took the photo while looking up, under the doorway. You can see one such roof in the background of this photo:

When D and I visited Boston, we went to Plimoth Plantation — a reconstruction of the original settlement in Plymouth. We saw Plymouth Rock (much smaller than we expected) and spent the day learning about the 1620’s, from costumed interpreters.

Here D learned how to split wood, using the colonial tools.

This man is digging a post hole to repair a fence. The interpreters went about their day, just as one would have done in the 1620’s — repairing buildings and caring for crops and animals.

In all, it was a worthwhile stop, particularly since we’d studied the pilgrims in our homeschool curriculum last year.
