This is my Pass the Torch Tuesday post for this week, as well as Works for me Wednesday.

Looking over the Chicago River.
When we prepared to go to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry during our recent trip, we had to check out of our hotel first, before making the jaunt to Hyde Park. While I waited in line at the hotel counter, I asked the kids to go over to the concierge to ask directions to the museum. We’d be taking a city bus and needed to know which one, as well as where to board. The kids also wanted to ride the subway and the L at some point during the day, so I asked them to go across the lobby to ask the concierge’s advice on this as well.
They were very polite and assertive in asking for directions, and the woman at my counter commented about how she’d never seen children so confidently approach the concierge like that.
I explained that we’re from the country and need to take every opportunity to learn the ways of the big city;))
The kids did a great job of asking directions and using their street map, but I listened in after I finished checking out, just to make sure we didn’t end up in the middle of Lake Michigan.
Works for me!

The Museum of Science and Industry was just a 20-minute city bus ride south of our hotel. We took a special tour of the U-505 submarine and learned a lot about World War II.

We worked a computerized Enigma machine simulator. It was a great learning tool.

The kids also got to ride in a submarine simulator. They promptly sunk it and reached crush depth. I guess they won’t go into the Navy.

And they would have lived in the Idea Factory, if possible. It was difficult to capture a non-blurry photo, since they were moving at the speed of light for at least an hour. VERY fun.
Here’s the whole Chicago series:

A fantastic museum!
I’ve got to tell the hubby that the kids took the sub to crush depth. (he was a submariner in the navy and actually had a near crush experience that he WILL NEVER forget. I must write it on my blog)

Overwhelmed! – Thank you so much! It is very satisfying during those moments – and it makes up for all the not-so-proud ones;)
Pamela – I would LOVE to read his story! I’m glad he fared better than my kids did in their simulation;)

Your children are so mature for their age. You’re doing such a great job raising and homeschooling them!

Hey Kelly,
Chicago is a GREAT city and I wish when we went, we would have had more time. It was a mother-daughter trip with friends, we were there to visit the American Girls Store. Sometime I want to return with the boys…there’s just so much to see and DO!
Doesn’t it make your mamapride soar when D & K shine like this?

I love how you are empowering them with city skills. I was in HS before I had any city sense and I lived in the suburbs.

When we lived in the midwest we always wanted to visit Chicago but moved before we had a chance. Too bad, that looks fun.

Wow!!! That’s incredible! I never would have thought to let the kiddos do that for us…another lesson from the PTT lady! Thanks for sharing!

We took my daughter there last summer (I live in the south suburbs of Chicago so it wasn’t much of a drive). She was 3 at the time and loved the Idea Factory too!
