For Mother’s Day this year, I took the kids to my mom’s to help her plant her garden. It was the best gift we could give her, and on this near-80-degree day, she was very appreciative of their long legs and boundless energy. I, of course, mostly took photos;)
Mom does a great job of passing the torch — teaching the kids a skill, and then turning it over to them. I’d like to focus on this part of PTT this week.
First, you pick a perfect day, in a lovely setting.
You need high-tech equipment, like ice cream buckets and bags of potting soil.
And post-hole diggers.
Split up the roots a bit.
Remove all the useless sand in the hole, and replace with black dirt before placing the pepper plant.
Drench the plant, using buckets, watering cans, or spray nozzle. Beg to get sprayed.
And enlist a supervisor to keep watchful eye over the work being done.
My soon-filthy children enjoyed the work, even though it was hot and rigorous. I was almost inspired to put them to work in my landscaping. But there’s a reason I show you my mom’s yard, rather than mine.
I don’t weed.

What a great lesson for your children! Learning how to work in the garden with their grandma…something they will keep with them forever.
Mine try to “help” me too while I’m in my garden. My 3 year old is a master at plucking off blooms and replanting them for me. hee hee. However - she knows she can pull all the little maple tree sprouts that are coming up in the garden. Those she pulls with relish.

Oh what a treasured memory of photos. I LOVE it! Family is so where it’s at. No one can replace the work of any member and when we are exposed to each other in ways like this the lessons are fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

How special!!!! That is an amazing gift from the heart that will be enjoyed over and over when the garden begins to produce. And the pictures!!! Oh the pictures! You did an excellent job of documenting that special time.

I enjoyed these pictures. that would be a fun thing (with lots of patience required of grandmom) to do with grandchildren.

Very cool! Nice memories of a perfect day! Please tell ‘em that I bought another bag of potting soil and lots more plants, in case they are in need of doing something………heeheehee. Not today however, since it is freezing cold out there and down jackets really hamper digging in the dirt……

Simply wonderful! I just wish that more familys could do like this too. There is too much knowledge that just goes down the drain totally unnecessary nowadays. And it’s building up the kids selfconfidence so much, helping them through their whole life actually.
