As we completed our sixth month of homeschooling in April, I remember thinking to myself, “We just won’t count this month.”
Although we went through the motions most days, and were given much-needed breaks by family and friends, this month was definitely not the way we planned on homeschooling. A combination of seasonal moodiness, too much sibling togetherness, and a mother/teacher with way too much going on, April will not be the homeschooling month we look back on with fond memories.
But May?
May is going to be fantastic!

I bet they learned alot more than you realize, even if it wasn’t “formal” book learning. Don’t sweat it! Just keep your eye on the big picture

Well, sometimes you just need a “do-over” month. I know I’ve had a few when the days/weeks slipped into a month and I just felt like scratching the whole thing. So I say scratch it and move into May with smiles! I love your honesty. I can relate SO well….
Hugs,
Holly

[...] One that struck me was Kelly’s post about scratching the month of April. Sometimes this is just the best option when you feel things didn’t go the way you’d hoped. You give yourself permission to let it go and refocus your energy on what lay ahead. [...]

I’m just impressed you’ve made it this far. I doubt I could!

Homeschooling can really get to you. When my family first started, we really struggled. I was a burn-out waiting to happen for the first year. Then we chose (okay, I made an executive decision) to work on a system of 4 weeks of school and 1 week off. This allows us the flexibility to cover the work, and still have fun. Oh, and Mom doesn’t have to do planning on a day to day basis–I get to sort things out for the coming month during our week off. We’re really thriving on this system.
But even then, sometimes, you just need to back off a bit and be unconventional and laid-back and slip in the learning opportunities the same way we sometimes have to sneak veggies into their diets!
Enjoy May!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Michelle!
And Bethany – I think your system sounds fantastic! What an excellent way to plan for breaks. Thanks so much for the idea.

[...] This is the email I received from my sister-in-law after she kindly hosted C for a visit with his younger cousins. It was a break in the April madness last month: Having C here was great. I was prepared for a day of eyes glued to the kids, and had quite the opposite. C was so good with Jackson and Hailey. They did play a lot of trains upstairs and I managed to get about 5 loads of laundry done and folded and put away!!! He was so polite and had such good manners. I usually see C when he is excited to be around all the cousins, at a party etc etc.. it was nice to see a different side of him. He was so gentle with Hailey too. He guided her in the direction she needed to go rather than telling her to “get out of the way!” Jackson had a blast too and cried when he left! [...]
