This past weekend we hosted C’s “kid” birthday party. (Yes, I know – his birthday was two months ago. Welcome to my world;))
Anyway, our kids always make their own cake and as C was measuring ingredients, he stopped and said, “This seems like a lot of oil.”
I looked across the kitchen at him and saw a glass measuring cup filled almost halfway. He was right, it did look like too much. On closer look, I saw that he’d filled the measuring cup to 1 1/3, rather than 1/3.
I thought it was great that he recognized it didn’t quite look right, and that he asked for clarification before dumping it in. This is a tall order for a boy as impulsive as mine;)
The cake was tasty too.

And because it’s so much more fun than cracking them, he blew out the eggs (punched a hole in each end and blew out the yolk.) The photo shows one of his casualties. The other two shells survived.

Hello Pamela — I added an explanation because others may not know either. It’s when you punch a hole on either end, and blow out the yolk. He’s done that for quite a few now. I’m hoping to do an art project with them. They’re just clean shells, so you can paint them and they won’t smell.

Great to see that a young man is getting some training in the kitchen for once!

Wow! That is quite impressive for such a young guy to be that observant. He saved the cake! I hope he had a fun party!
And wow, thanks for spotlighting me, how exciting!

My kids have NEVER baked their own birthday cake, but I think that is a FUNTASTIC idea. I think they’d love it. I mean, how COOL is blowing egg guts out of its shell?
GREAT “action” photo Kelly

[...] You may know our kids usually bake their own birthday cakes, but their friends usually frost them as well. [...]
