The Ostego Bay Marine Science Center was small, with a few exhibits and a small table-sized pool of water. I learned that there is such a thing as a nine-armed starfish.
The tour lady was rude and tried to ignore us as much as possible. It would be okay if you came to look around yourself, or actually scheduled a tour.
Have fun?
(Mom’s note — We went out of our way to arrange a visit to the Marine Science
Center, during our stay on Ft. Myers Beach, Florida, on the day when “tours” were publicized. We were told we could just join the tour in progress, but were sharply disrespected by the tour guide when I dared to ask a clarifying question about shells. She also pushed my children to the back of the group when she realized they were not with the school children on the tour. The kids were very well-mannered and quiet, so there was no reason for us to be treated in this way. It’s possible the tour would have been more enjoyable had we arranged to be included beforehand. However, the woman giving the tour didn’t empower any of the children to ask questions anyway. She was rude to the school children as well. It was shocking to see someone like this in a public role in the 21st century. Her attitude was very much, “children are to be seen and not heard.”)

The kids (all of them) probably knew more about Marine Science than the rude woman anyway. I cannot tolerate people like that
Especially when they are rude to children!

I think I would have had to say something to someone in charge. That’s terrible! I hope they had fun anyways!
I did;)

Oh, how awful! I would think “works well with children” would be a prerequisite for employment at a Marine Science center. Hopefully, your children were too busy soaking in the surroundings to notice her rude behavior.
For us it was just a teachable moment. It was an eye-opening experience, more than anything. Our kids are really resilient – they just thought it was odd that someone would act that way.

Don’t you just hate that? I’m glad you were able to use it as a teaching experience for your kiddos. Some people really get loopy with a little power eh?

Oooohhhh! I hate when that happens! Hopefully the kids took something positive away from the experience, like how not to treat people no matter their age? On the up-side, at least your kids weren’t singled out. From what you say she was rude to everyone!

[...] Ostego Bay Marine Science Center — Although my daughter was not impressed by the Marine Science Center, that was only because of the rude tour guide we encountered in 2007. If she is no longer there, I’m sure it’s a lovely place to visit, learning all about life underwater. And it’s a convenient stop if you’re staying on Fort Myers Beach.
