I got it from the library yesterday and read it last night. I found the frequency of the Lord's name being taken in vain mildly disturbing and hope that part is not in the movie. I cried at the end (Did D?)

I'll probably let S&R read it and do that literature study on it. We have used those before, and they seem to enjoy it.

Thank you all for your comments here. I value your insight!

And Megan - I appreciate the update. It is nerve-racking when you know you can't keep up with everything your kids read. I guess I'll talk to D about expectations in general, and how to be a discerning reader.

This is a great discussion!

We read the next two chapters tonight and the language was much better. I only edited out improper use of the name of the Lord and mostly because it was used so frequently and I'm reading to kids ages: 8, 6, 5, 3 that I really don't want my younger ones to think that's okay for us. The first two chapters had some actual cursing, about three or four words, which that much (plus the improper use of Lord) in two chapters was a surprise for me and thus I decided to edit out.

I had my first experience with my oldest checking out a book unknown to me from the library last week. I didn't have time to read it and had no idea what it was about. Makes me a bit nervous. I mean, I want to teach them to be discerning readers and to evaluate on the basis of good literature and not necessarily worldview (though I want the to be able to discipher worldview).

I know. I'm asking a lot. I'm just nervous because my 8 year old reads on a 6th-7th grade level, yet has a normal 8 year old grid for discernment (which means it's not that fully developed yet...)

Okay, I've hijacked your comments. Sorry if I caused unnecessary alarm!

Kellen read the book also and later told me about the choice words. I have a hard time monitoring books. I use http://www.pluggedinonline.com/
a lot for movies, but besides reading everything first myself (and he reads a lot of books!) I don't know how to monitor books

Good review, D! I taught this book to my students about 100 years ago (well, maybe not that long but it feels like it!) and most of them really enjoyed it too. I threw all my teaching stuff out about 6 months ago otherwise I could have sent you some word puzzles and other activities for this book.

I saw the previews on tv but had no idea what the movie was about. Now it makes more sense. Thank you for the review, D!

Did you check it out from the library or buy it?

Where do you find most of your reading books? I know my grandchildren have access to their school library. So I wondered what home school kids do for books.

I think you should be allowed to use the school library because your mom and dad pay taxes to buy those books.

(Mom here) We bought this book at a store in the airport, but we visit three local public libraries to check out books as well. And my husband checks out books for us from his school also. I'm sure our local school would make an arrangement with us too, if we needed it.

Thanks for the review!

Now then, Mom - I just started this book with my girls tonight in anticipation of the movie coming out soon. We read two chapters and I found myself editing out choice words as I read which is something I *usually* don't do. I'll usually go ahead and read them and sometimes stop later and have a talk about why the author choose to use those words as opposed to other words that could have made the point just as well.

There were just too many of those in the first two chapters. What were your thoughts on that with this book?

HMMMM... I had no idea (great supervision, huh??) I didn't read it at all. We bought the book at the airport because we had a long layover. She finished it before we got home. Oh boy, now I need to go back and read what you're talking about!
