I could complete an uninterrupted thought.

I read books and watched movies.

I finished projects.

I was organized and prompt.

And mostly I knew what I was doing.
Ten years ago today, a seven-pound, squishy red pile of human started a chain of shifts in my super-controlled life. As a young adult, I hardly predicted being a mother at all, let alone ultimately quitting my job to be one — exclusively. But each sacrifice seems so small now, compared to what I’ve gained.
She mirrors my own imperfections and challenges me to become a better mom — a better person. And she forgives me every time I screw up. She’s generous, and smart, and kind.
When I grow up, I want to be just like her.
Happy Birthday, D.
I love you.
