Having survived our first week of homeschooling, we’re anxious to start a second one. But we’ll do it without leaving the house this time.
This week’s theme is “government” — we’re gearing up for the elections next Tuesday. I’m using government-related social studies units about local, state and federal goverment from grade 2 and Wisconsin government from grade 4, as well as a story about “Officer Buckle” in second grade reading. Toward the end of the week, Deena will begin to analyze the candidates for office in our area. I’m looking for an age-appropriate novel to read aloud to them this week, — something related to government, politics or elections. Any ideas??
We’ll probably finish Stuart Little this week in our read-aloud time on couch (I quit reading the Newbery Author short stories book – the vocabulary was too much for Curt.) I’m going to ask Deena to start reading an online “kid” newspaper as well. I’d love a “Weekly Reader” type. If you have any online ideas, please share them.
Journaling will continue each morning, and the kids are creating a list of their own journal questions now. Math, grammar (Curt) and spelling will continue at each child’s pace. I’m still looking for a grammar/language curriculum for Deena. She’ll continue writing in her online journal, Tales of a Fourth Grade Guinea Pig. She loves comments, so please consider leaving her one if you visit.
And many of you have asked if the kids like homeschooling so far. I forget that my sometimes-snarky comments might make it seem otherwise. But they LOVE IT!! I know it’s new, but they have a great attitude about it. Deena even insisted I school on Saturday this weekend.
She’s nearly as odd as I am;)

The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree!
I like Deena’s title for her online journal, fits perfectly.
Stuart Little is such a wonderful book.I’ll have to pick that one up and read it to the kids.
Have a great Monday Kelly!

My daughter always keeps a notebook handy when she’s reading; she records words she doesn’t know, and then goes back later to look them up. This has always amazed me, but her vocabulary is beyond her years (we didn’t teach her to do this, she just did it!).

It is too juvenile for them, for Duck for President is a cute book. But like I said … too juvenile.
I think it is an excellent idea for Deena to analyze the candidates in your area. My oldest has been asking about the tons of yarn signs she is seeing, and took some interest in my discussion with her about the upcoming elections.

Great ideas! Robin – I suggested that to Deena and I think she might do it for text book reading ( you have a smart one there!)
And Meredith – YES!! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that! Actually, Curtis loves to read Click, CLack, Moo – and Its a very similar book (same author??) So we’ll do that. Yes, it’s juvenile, but they really like that sometimes.

Amelia Bedlia for Mayor isn’t all that educational, but it sure is fun. She cracks me up!
That’s PERFECT Leslie!!!! Thanks for the idea!
