I’ve become a scavenger of sorts ever since embarking on our Experiment. A once-in-a-while checkeroutterofbooks has turned into an avid attender of no fewer than three community libraries. Some of you veteran library-goers may not be all that impressed, but do you know what I’ve discovered?

They sell their old books.
Cheap.
And sometimes not very old.
The ridiculous pile above, includes multiple titles sure to gather dust until 2016 (the year both kids are in college), but others that are excellent resources for our home studies. The grand total?
THREE BUCKS.
If you’re interested in more information about our experiment, please check the sidebar. I’ve linked to all the posts about our homeschooling adventure, including Deena’s.

Now that’s a steal of the century!! And I love deals and books! I might have to check that out at our local library too. Thanks for the tip Kelly!

You’re welcome! I’m a regular now. I don’t know if it’s the time of year or what, but several of the libraries have awesome books for sale. I got another pile for about $5 at a different library.

I found that a great resource for cheap kids books (and adult books too) are garage sales! People don’t keep kids books forever so sometimes you can get a hardcover Dr. Seuess or a award winning book for a dollar or less.

Now THAT was a great deal! I wish our library’s bookstore sold their books that cheaply.
Check and see if they have large sales, too – our library does a HUGE sale at least twice a year and I can get TONS of stuff there. If I go on the last day, I can get them dirt cheap, but the selection isn’t as good.

You bargain shopper! How cool is that.

I LOVE library sales. We went to one a couple of weeks ago and walked away with two cartons ($20) and three bags ($20). Considering the huge HUGE pile of books we got, and that some of them were art books that are pricey, we did so great. There is another sale this weekend and we are debating going. I’m always on the hunt for more homeschooling resources.

Wow – what a great-looking pile of books! Awesome deal!

We *love* our annual library sale! I can’t tell you how many of
of our homeschooling books have come from shopping at my local library!

Our library holds a sale once or twice a year. I love it. You made out like a bandit at yours.

Such a great resource. I’m should check it out, especially since Christmas is around the corner!

I’ve read both Grisham books and The Nanny Diaries! Great choices!

I get FREE books from my library. They have a huge sale in the summer, and sell them relatively cheaply (not as cheap as your haul), and they collect donations all year long. They sort through and there’s a bench where they put the books that they aren’t going to save for the sale–free! I usually walk away with one to four books each time I’m there. Gotta love it. I also frequent 2 different libraries, depending on which way I’m headed that day.

That’s GREAT! I was just asking a group today about online libraries that send rents like Netflix as Amazon used is great but too slow for my book club. Now I have another idea!! ;o) Thanks!

Wow – that is impressive!

Have you noticed they sell old library books at Books a Million, too? They’re cheap, but not as inexpensive as a library sale.
