There’s a great discussion going on at 5 Minutes for Mom. I was meaning to post this question as a follow-up to my Positively Speaking column this month, about responsibility. But they beat me to the punch!! Excellent questions and comments about allowance. Add your two cents (here or there).

Very educational. I’m not yet giving allowances to my 3-year old. But I will keep the advice given in the comments when I do.

Here in my country, we do not have anything like allowance from parents. It is upto them what they give. Here, many parents think that they should give cash to their children.

Thanks for the link!
Sorry that we beat you to the question… luckily I know you’ll never short of topics. I’m looking forward to your next column.

Base it on what you think they might do to you when you get old and senile. If you think they’ll let you stay at their house, give them allowance for no chores at all.
If they are the kind that will lock you up in a rest home… Let them earn money selling lemonade.
(giggle. This didn’t help at all, did it!!!!!)

I’m so giving my children chores after reading this article. My 6 y/o is doing little things like making his bed (on good days), but not much. That’s a great article Kelly. And I too grew up in a country where you have a responsibilily in your house and there was never allowance paid. And I think that’s a better idea, this way the kids appreciate doing chores b/c Mom and Dad take good care of them, not because Mom and Dad are paying them to do the work that they should contribute any way.
