(It’s HUSBAND WEEK at Pass the Torch.) (I see Holly’s celebrating husband week also!)
My husband and my son share a wonderful hobby. They both love to fish. And at the ripe old age of seven, my son has now accompanied my husband on a total of FOUR Canada fishing trips.
These are not the kind of excursions that my daughter nor I would ever participate. They are rustic and lack running water, modern toilets, and heat. Seven days of trees, water and fish. That’s it.
But Curt LOVES it, and every year he’s tagged along with my husband’s family, every bit the serious fisherman. Every day, he get’s up early, sits in a boat up to six hours in a row, goes to bed before the rest of the guys, and plays cards if it rains. And every year, his dad beams with pride for the way he behaves himself. No whining. No “I’m bored.” Curt has wormed his way into the hearts of all the fishermen at camp, and is welcomed back without hesitation.
This year, my husband forgot to pack any toys for him. For seven days, a seven-year-old had not a single toy. But they improvised. They played catch with a half-empty water bottle. And he played in the rocks a lot. Husband told me that one day when they were all waiting for dinner, he found Curt sitting on the dock with a broken rock. He had smashed it into several tiny pieces, mixed them up, then put it back together like a puzzle.
Why do I ever feel the need to entertain my children?

Today is Husband’s birthday and we’re playing a “guess his name” game to wish him well. UPDATE: Robin guessed his name (and wins the award to be revealed later today.) But I can drag this on a bit, since she listed TEN: Steve, Jamie, Eddie, Shane, Wayne, Vance, Brice, Deane, Earle or Reece. Notice that she found both clues in archives: ends with “e” and five letters long.
Pass the Torch Tuesday Guidelines: Every week, we share simple and stupendous times kids make us proud. Just write about catching a kid being good, link to this specific post (it will ping in comments) or put your link in comments so we can find it, and read everyone’s posts. Happy birthday to Ron? Or Richard? Or Keith? How about Henry? Or Arthur? Am I on to something?

My hubby took his daughters fishing. We have pictures like that – of little girls with missing teeth and big grins. Lots of grubby fingers and hair that didn’t get brushed.
12:52 am
ps
wouldn’t it be funny if his name was Alburtis Curtis.. ha ha ha ha ha ha
But, I’m sticking with James.

It’s a day late and a dollar short, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your dreamy, fantastic, fun making, gas tank-fillin’, family-providing, mouse-catching, SEXY best friend!!! I was so wrapped up in my own little world I didn’t get to visit many cyber friends yesterday, so I hope he likes celebrating all week long
.
Me likey to play games, so here are my top TEN guesses for your mystery man: Steve, Jamie, Eddie, Shane, Wayne, Vance, Brice, Deane, Earle or Reece. And you KNOW that required a little work
.
If I was giving out “Pass the Torch” awards, I’d have to give it to your son this week…seven years old, seven days no toys, seven days no complaining…MUCH IMPRESSED
. What a GREAT father/son tradition!!
7:50 am
I woke up this morning to find a WINNER! Robin, you’re smokin’ this week! And you’ll win the award I post later today. Til then, since you listed 10, I can drag out the suspense;)
By the way, you’re RIGHT ON TIME with your happy birthday wishes. Today is his birthday, I just posted this entry early.

Kyle?
Jose?
Blake?
Also, my PTT entry is up today.

7:56 am
Well I won’t have a guess at your hubby’s name, I’ll just wish him a Happy birthday along with a “very well done” to Curt for managing for seven days with no toys – that is awesome ! (I couldn’t do it LOL).
My PTT post.
7:56 am
Oh I missed the post that said you have a winner LOL.
8:01 am
Leslie – LOL! You’ve been a trooper with your guesses! I just woke up this morning to the correct guess. I’ll reveal later today which of Robin’s guesses is correct.
9:29 am
That is a very impressive young man yo have there! But you already knew that, didn’t you? ;O) I like to fish , haven’t been in years- but still… I agree with you, those don’t sound like conditions in which any lady should have to suffer, LOL! Mine is up, happy PTT!
9:44 am
Ok Kelly. I have my own PTT today, but didn’t read this entry until after I wrote and published mine. I will dedicate mine to my husband next week, if that is ok?
And my guess:
Patrick.
9:47 am
Can’t wait to hear the answer to the burning name question. *smile*
Curt sounds like every father’s dream for a son. Who wouldn’t love spending time with him?!
Drama Queen is also very creative. She didn’t take any toys with us on vacation. I woke up from an afternoon nap one day and found that she had used a Sharpie to draw full-size people on 4 water bottles. She drew houses and cars on paper plates and later had The Hubster cut flaps in them so her people could go in and out of the doors.
A Kind Act

Thanks for joining us again Meredith! I really didn’t intend for everyone’s PTT posts to be about their husbands, so you’re right on track. It’s just me celebrating MY husband this week.
Tonya – your kids are so cool. I also added a link to your post from yesterday, to your comment. It’s a great example for PTT.
I know, the burning question. I feel all-powerful keeping you all in suspense;)
9:53 am
Your son is a very resourceful young man!
Happy Birthday to Kelly’s husband! My guess was Steve, and that’s not it.
One of my favorite memories was fishing with my DAD. I didn’t mind catching fish, as long as I didn’t have to touch or clean them. My PTT is up!
10:04 am
Wahooooo!! Of course, I was thinking of even more on my way home just now, so GLAD I can put my mind at ease. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I’m fired up
. Evidently, it pays to pay attention
.
1:25 pm
I used to take the very same type of fishing trips when my dad was a kid. Unfortunately, I didn’t hold up as much as yours did
I hated every minute of it at the time, and was bored to tears.
Now 20+ years later, I can see the need and lure for the trips, and try and subject my daughter to the same painful trips! Who’d a thunk?
9:14 pm
[...] Today marks the final day in my Husband Week lovefest. Of course, this doesn’t mean I will stop referring to him, it’s just that from now on I’ll be able to call him Wayne and hyperlink to the gaggalishus love I’ve already subjected you to, rather than insisting you wade through it again;) Thank you all for joining in on the festivities this week.
