Jan 02, 2006

Today was a lot like yesterday. We did a spelling test, math, reading and made a ‘voting graph’ for social studies. We then had a long break supposedly cleaning the house but really playing. Then we went ‘home schooling shopping!’ We bought crafts to do for Christmas, mainly. We bought letters to decorate, paint, and all the art stuff you could imagine. (Including a trash can, and of course, candy.) We came home at 6: 00, but it was so dark out, I thought it was past bedtime. (Mom told me that later.)

Here is the unedited story Deena (age 9) presented to me today as a gift. I didn’t assign this story, and had no part in it’s creation. Except for the characters, I suppose;)

It is a true account of an event that happened yesterday in our sometimes strange home. I’m sharing this because I’m amazed at how her interest in writing has mushroomed since beginning our experiment. I’ve moved her daily journal to a different page on this blog, and if you’ve commented there, thank you! (Several of you commented on the old page, but I had to move it for blognical reasons. If I can figure out how to move the old comments, I will.)

Today we worked quickly in the morning. I made a mobile of the three branches of government, and then we left for a field trip. We were going to the courthouse. We looked around and a judge actually gave us a tour. (!!!) Then I had piano lessons in a cozy lady’s cottage. We had lunch at dad’s office. My favorite thing about today was the courthouse.

Today was just like yesterday. My favorite thing about today was break time when we picked out C’s costume. (He will be a nerd) My least favorite thing was math. We were learning hard mental math. I still don’t get it.

DAY 6
NORMAL DAY (Finally)

Today was a normal day again. This morning we did our chores, turned on the music, and started school. We took out our reading books and read all about government. (That is what we’re studying this week) After that mom asked us if we wanted to finish reading Stuart Little, but we said we wanted to do that later today. So we agreed we would do that later. Mom then took out the spelling papers. I had 35 words. I got 25 right, and 10 wrong. Well, I guess that was pretty good for such hard words.

After spelling was science/math/reading. C took out his Science, (Some kind of worm he was studying) and I took out my new math and reading workbook. I answered 4 questions on my own, while C studied his worm with mom. Then came recess when we had to go outside while mom cooked spaghetti. I hate recess. I would much rather cook. I put on my jacket anyway. When I was outside I walked over to the tire swing and spun around in circles with it. I let go and it hit me a million times. After that we, C and I ran around like chickens with our heads cut off. (Dad’s expression) It wasn’t fun, but there was nothing else to do. Then finally we went inside for lunch. After lunch, we took magazines and cut out clippings of things that had to do with government. We glued everything to a Venn diagram and hung it on the bulletin board.

Then, while C played on the computer, I did math. It was very hard because it was a new Chapter. Then we switched. That was a pretty normal day for us.

DAY 5
MACRAME BRACELETS

We woke up, packed up and headed for the conference again. When we got there we were late so we missed the first exhibitor period. I told a few people about our games but there was hardly any one there. After C and I got bored we decide to make macramé jewelry at the art table. (Mom said we would do this instead of math class.) I made a pink, a blue, a green, a yellow and a purple one in spiral. Curtis made a wave necklace, (For me) and a few square bracelets. (For mom.) We actually did that for about 4 hours!! Then mom said we had to leave quickly so se didn’t get in any other conversations. C and I worked fast and it worked! We walked to the car and drove home.

DAY 4
HEALTHY COMMUNITIES/HEALTHY YOUTH CONFERENCE

We woke up at Lisa and Lynn’s house around 7:30. (Lisa and Lynn are my twin aunts) We all went downstairs and watched cartons while Lisa and Lynn got ready for work. When they were gone we got our morning chores done and got bundled up to go to HYATT, mom’s conference. We drove into town and had breakfast at Bonnie’s. I had a blueberry pancake with sausage and milk. (YUM!!) Then we left for HYATT. We got there and told people about our products. When Curtis and I got bored, we took a look at everyone’s booth. We found a activity book and did it. It was a pack that you write the answer, put a check in the completed square, give it to him to sign and she gives you a button. (There is a boy and a girl.) There were 8 buttons to get and we got them in a jiffy.

Then our name goes in a drawing and we could win an I-pod or a radio. After that we went to the art booth, did some stamps and went back to tell people about the game. (C just sat behind the table.) When everyone was good and hungry, we went upstairs and had a small lunch. We came back, and did different things for about an hour. After that we gathered our things and drove home.
